an assessment about what intervention in syria might require. the pentagon says a u.s. military effort to seize the stockpile of chemical weapons require upward of 75,000 troops and the "times" reports that senior american officials are concerned that the militant group hezbollah have set up training camps near the chemical weapons depots. >>> four people were killed in texas when a freight train slammed into a parade float carrying wounded veterans. this is just terrible. the accident happened at a railroad crossing in midland, texas, as the float tried to get around the safety gates and lights. the float was made with a flat bed trailer with chairs for each of the veterans. in addition to the four deaths, others were injured. >> this may be one of the most tragic events we've had in our town and it's a sad day. i shook their hands and saw them personally, met their wives. it truly was an honor to be in their presence. these guys are true american heroes. >> secretary of defense leon panetta issued a statement saying he's deeply saddened. the ntsb is sending a team to midland to investigate. >

. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. >> we are following a developing story in the south bay. injuries to a south bay fire captain may be more serious than first thought. he was hurt while battling appear apartment fire in san jose and he remains in the hospital this morning. the damage was done at the apartment complex on willowleaf road. christie smith joins us with the latest on the fire captain's condition. good morning, christie ir. >> reporter: good morning to you. i finally spoke with a fire captain on scene. he said a chance to speak to that injured firefighter and he's still in good spirits, still feeling some pain, though. he was injured when a section of ceiling collapsed on him and he was actually trapped under that for just a little while. there is still a crew here on fire watch this morning. there was some concern still about the stability of the burned building. it was burned so badly and they sprayed so much water on it, that's where the concern is coming from. it started around 8:30 last night at this townhom

joins us from the summit on highway 17 with more on what kept the chp most busy today. kris? >> reporter: hi there, janelle. luckily for me, no need for an umbrella right now. but we certainly got rain earlier. we saw fog and lots of high winds. the chp was out in force. they don't have specific numbers for us just yet, but we can tell you they were going from call to call. frustration on highway 17 north of the summit as traffic backed up for miles after the driver of a white cargo van spun out and blocked half of the highway. oak stowell of los gatos saw that. >> we were getting by fine until this semitruck came by and the van and the wall. >> reporter: the crash happened along highway 17's infamous s-curve. the road is so tight that the chp officer had to push the van with his patrol car because not even a tow truck could make it through. at the summit we found a business manager named, no joke, joe weatherman. >> the chp sitting up here are never sit hearing for more than four minutes because this road makes people crazy. they drive too fast. they don't pay attention to the condition

. a press conference has been scheduled for 9:30. we expect the mayor and assistant police chief to give us up-to-date information and answer any questions from the media. >> kimberly tere reporting for us, thank you. . new information on a deadly shooting in menlo park. police are saying the victim may have been killed during a robbery. today the victim was identified as 42-year-old kerry -- in the east bay. two people approached them. at some point shots were fired and officers found the victim in the street. witnesses saw two men wearing dark colored hooded sweatshirts running from the area. police have not released the identity of the woman but ask anyone with information to call the police department. police are not saying whether the victim was targeted or if it was a random attack a three-car accident happened 2:30 this afternoon. a 34-year-old woman died at the hospital. a 37-year-old man from the same car suffered major head injuries. no word on his condition or the condition of the others hur. some witnesses told nbc bay area that people often speed through the area because there

us live from tel aviv, israel, with those details. martin, good morning. >> reporter: hi, veronica, good morning. the cease-fire went into effect 9:00 in the evening last night. that's 17 hours ago. and so far, so good. there were two early this morning sirens in the south of israel, warning sirens of rockets. turned out, they were just false alarms, though, so it is holding for the time being. and also, the israeli army has just given orders about an hour or two ago for the first of the army reserve soldiers that it called up for a possible ground invasion of gaza. 30,000 reserve soldiers were called up. the first of those have been given orders now that they can return to their homes and to their jobs, and at the same time, they're keeping others on duty because there's still a great amount of skepticism about whether the cease-fire will hold. they hope that it will, of course, but some skepticism, so much so, for instance, that the schools of the area, all schools have been closed within a 40-kilometer distance of gaza for the last week. all of the kids staying at home, many of
